Sunday June 17th - The USA U19 WNT followed their disappointing loss on Friday to the Northeast U23's with an emphatic 46-8 win against the South U23's.
Match Report below with video to follow.
Coming out much faster than their older opponents the U19's scored in the second minute when speedy wing Catherine Turnerdrown (Riverton, UT) touched down in the left corner. Before the South U23's could establish any possession the U19's scored again when wing Seymira Salami (State College, PA) crossed on the right side. Stacey Bridges (Texas A&M) converted to make it 12-0. Five minutes later some great support play saw flanker Kerrie Hughes (North Bay, MD) take a pass out wide and she was able to center the ball for another score. Bridges converted to make it 19-0. The game slowed as the U19's were guilty of a series of infractions and the South took advantage to get on the board with a penalty. Late in the half Tayo Mafe (Michigan State) had an aggressive run from a lineout play that sucked in the South defense and a quick offload to Laura Parker (Kansas City Jazz) allowed the U19 Captain to slice through the remaining defenders to score. On the last play of the half the South responded with a try of their own to close the gap. Halftime score 26-8 to the U19 WNT.
In the second half the speed and mobility of the young Eagles continued to cause problems and they were quickly on the scoreboard with a try from fullback Alicia Hartley (Brown). The loss of fly half Lisa Henneman (Kent, WA) with a cut lip just ten minutes into the half didn’t slow them down and they continued to control the game throughout the half. Parker picked up her second try to put the U19’s up 34-8. Fifteen-year-old Katie Johnson (Hopkins, MN) was having a great game at number eight and a series of strong runs saw her finally rewarded with a try. Catie Turnerdrown scored for a second time late in the half and a conversion by Brittany Huston (Vernon, WI) made the final score 46-8 to the U19 WNT.
